CGI Math
Building Strong Math Thinkers
At Palms Elementary, we use Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) strategies to help students become confident and capable mathematicians. This student-centered approach is based on more than 30 years of research and begins with what children already know about numbers and problem solving.
CGI recognizes that students come to school with important math ideas and experiences. In our classrooms, students solve a variety of math problems and explain their thinking. By sharing their ideas with classmates and teachers, students learn new strategies and build a deeper understanding of math.
Teachers guide this process by listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and encouraging students to explain their reasoning. This helps uncover what each child understands and supports them as they grow.
Through this approach, students learn that math is not just about getting the right answer—it is about thinking, exploring, and making connections. As a result, math becomes meaningful, engaging, and useful in everyday life.
✨ At Palms, we help students build confidence in math while developing strong problem-solving skills that will support them for years to come.
