Las Palmas Grupo Folklorico
Las Palmas Grupo Folklorico, founded in 2006 by Derek Spencer, is an after-school Mexican folkdance group open to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students of Palms Elementary School. Las Palmas dancers perform at various school and community events throughout the school year including the school’s celebrations and events, Knott’s Berry Farm, Downey Theater, The Los Angeles Chinatown Firecracker Festival, Local Farmer’s Markets, La Placita Olvera Street Festivals, local and cross-city LAUSD elementary school performances, and The Palms Neighborhood Block Parties.
Our membership comes from diverse backgrounds and abilities. Volunteer director Derek Spencer, a student and performer of folkloric dance for over 18 years, teaches his students traditional regional Mexican folk dances while incorporating instruction in regional Mexican cultures, the historical context of the dances, and basic music concepts, with a focus on teamwork and cultural authenticity. Las Palmas is also very fortunate to have the support of parents, the school staff, administration, and the community.
